Skip the savory buns here and go right for the sweet buns! The char siu bun and the big bun were both heavy on the bread but low on the filling. I was ready to write this place off. However, when people suggested I come back and try the pumpkin bun or the salted egg yolk bun, that was a real gamechanger. I love anything salted egg yolk, and this bun did not disappoint! They were much more generous on the filling, and honestly the filling was so rich and delicious that a little bit goes a long way. The pumpkin bun was also surprisingly good, and I did not expect to love it as much as I did. It's lighter on the sweetness than the salted egg yolk bun, but still very good. The buns themselves have a beautiful steamed, fluffy texture. They make a really affordable and delicious breakfast. I'll definitely be stopping by again!

My extended stay in NYC, living in the Lower East Side, this bakery in Chinatown has become one of our favs. The bread for their steamed buns is soft, and fluffy, really good. Their big chicken bun is delish, with chicken, mushroom and lop cheung. Their BBQ pork baked pastry "cha siu so" is tasty. Their "Nai Wong bao" or custard bao is also very good. Generous amount of fillings.

An amazing little place on Mott Street in the heart of Chinatown. I got a hot tip that they carry zongzi and indeed they did, frozen and packaged by half dozen for a paltry $11 (cash only, REMEMBER!). The Tainan-style sticky rice dumplings are delicious and this will be my go-to place until prime zongzi season in June or when I can locate the famed but mysterior zongzi lady. I'll have to return for pork buns and other pastries. I understand the pumpkin bun is great here and I love pumpkin.

was looking for a place that opens early for pork buns and found this spot on reddit. i normally like roasted pork buns, but their steamed pork buns were great! i've gone back to get their frozen sticky rice in lotus leaf and am very happy with that as well. strongly recommend!!

Get on the Golden Steamer train! Golden Steamer is an absolute gem in Chinatown! It's your standard cash-only place so be prepared, but as we came later in the day we had limited options. We got two char siu steamed baos for only $2.50 for BOTH. They were stunning. Nice, soft, pillowy, and the most flavorful tender char siu inside. I'm kicking myself for not ordering more to take with me. No need to wait in Mei Lah Wah's line!

What an awesome place, and what an institution. You can buy individual buns for $1.50, or you can purchase 4 in a plastic container for $6. The custard bun was excellent, with some elements of sweetness and creaminess in the inside. The bun breading was excellent as well, fluffy and warm and a good counterpoint to the sweetness of the filling. Looking forward to trying the other flavors as well!

Good people and delicious food. Buns are around $1.25-$2 a piece. I tried the chicken and the cha siu. The cha siu was delicious but honestly I preferred the chicken! Buns were heavenly and the fillings were flavourful and generous for the price. Cash only as is to be expected at the Chinatown holes-in-a-wall. They also have a no photos policy that seems strange but I can't complain. You can get the buns by individual pieces fresh or they have packs of six or eight (I couldn't tell) for around $6 on sale. Really yummy, definitely worth a stop.
